Good News for the Troops and the Children

Bill to Protect Custody for Deployed
Associated Press May 17, 2007

U.S. Lawmakers Pass Amendment to Protect Custody Arrangements of Deployed Soldiers

The House passed an amendment Wednesday that aims to prevent Soldiers deployed to war from permanently losing custody of their children because of the absence.

Rep. Mike Turner, R-Ohio, offered the amendment after reading an Associated Press story that revealed that servicemembers with custody of their children before deployment have returned home to see temporary changes become lasting - losing their children because of their duty.

The amendment, which was passed by voice vote as part of a defense policy bill, would reinstate the custody arrangements of a Soldier's children in place before the Soldier left for war. It would provide an exception for temporary orders issued in the best interest of the child.

"This additional protection is needed to provide them peace of mind that the courts will not take away their children because they answered the country's call to service," Turner said.

I was happy to see this on Military.com.... While custody of children is a personal issue, our troops should not have the added pressure of worrying that they may lose custody of their children due to deployment. It's a tough time for all right now, and I really hate it for the kids, but they can only be protected so much. Kids pick up on things; we can only conceal so much from them. We live in a dangerous time, and like the Jewish children of the Holocaust, our children of today, brought up in a world of terror are going to learn at an early age that life is not only tough at times, it is also dangerous for them to believe that our world is one big happy place. War requires sacrifice and as harsh as it may be for today's youth to even begin to understand that, I think that many times we don't give credit due the children on adjusting to change. Just my opinion, but way to go Rep. Mike Turner from Ohio! This at least levels the "playing field of child custody."

It is about time...
We also need a restriction on filing for divorce while someone is deployed...
