BLOOD IS THICKER THAN WATER: Panama; Some Fierce Resistance

#1. An armoured vehicle is unloaded from a ship.

#2. Amphibious landings were made in Colon and several other locations.

#3. The aftermath of the bombardment of Chorillo where the PDF headquarters and central barracks were located, was the grim task of removing the bodies from some 21 hectares of the densely-populated residential area, one of the poorest in the city, which was razed to rubble in an action which the Southern Command could surely not have anticipated would call for such terrible punishment.

#4. The striking photograph below was taken while under fire at the PDF Transit Department Headquarters at Ancon. Soldiers from the 5th Battalion, 87th Infantry, 193rd Infantry Brigade (Light) had occupied the headquarters when they were fiercely attacked by determined gunfire which reportedly killed and wounded a number of civilians. This soldier appears to be yelling at Panamanians to keep down.Above: Santo Tomas Hospital, in Panama City was a nightmare as the dead, injured and dying were brought in. Conditions were made more chaotic by armed members of the Dignity Battalions who tried to use the hospital as a base and a refuge.
Soldiers of the 82nd Airborne Division bivouac in the shelter of the ruins of Old Panama, the original Panama City whose walls perhaps still echo the violence of the attack of Henry Morgan's men four centuries ago.
