What Is Nancy Pelosi Thinking?

Two weeks ago, I wrote to you about how House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D.-Calif.) is attempting to appease anti-English extremists in the House by blocking legislation that would protect American employers such as the Salvation Army from being sued by the federal government for requiring that their employees speak English on the job. As I write, Speaker Pelosi is still holding up a bill sponsored by Sen. Lamar Alexander (R.-Tenn.) that would give charities such as the Salvation Army protection from frivolous anti-English lawsuits brought by their own government.

And as if this hostility to our common language weren't enough, now Speaker Pelosi's House has approved a bill that would establish a race-based government in Hawaii that is not subject to the Constitution. What is Speaker Pelosi thinking?

A Race-Based Government in Hawaii? So Much for 'E Pluribus Unum'

Has it somehow escaped Speaker Pelosi and the authors and supporters of this bill that hundreds of thousands of Americans gave their last full measure of devotion in the American Civil War to preserve a nation dedicated to liberty and equality among all men and women, regardless of race?

The Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act would not only create a race-based government in Hawaii, but also its racial jurisdiction could extend to include governance over the thousands of native Hawaiians living throughout the United States. State legislatures in all 50 states may potentially be required to accommodate two tiers of sovereignty -- one for native Hawaiians, another for everybody else.

The Senate should reject this misguided bill. If it doesn't, the President should veto it. And all presidential candidates should affirm, by their opposition to this legislation, that America is more than a collection of competing, aggrieved ethnicities.

By their opposition to this bill, all men and women who lead -- or seek to lead -- this nation should affirm that the motto found on the Great Seal of the United States -- "E Pluribus Unum" -- still stands:

Out of Many, One.

[Where are we?] U.S. sues Salvation Army for speaking English‏

We get these newsletters from Grassfire and wanted to pass it along. Mom, this should really get you fired up. It should get all of us fired up. Where do we live? I for one do not care if someone doesn't know how to speak English. I'm not offended by that at all. I know how hard it has been for me to try and learn another language, but I will say this: This is America. English is our language. I am not going to be eligible for many positions because I'm not Spanish speaking (about 60-80% of the population where I live is Hispanic.) I have no problem with English being required for a job anywhere in the United States!

The headline is correct. The Federal Government has filed suit against the Salvation Army and is targeting other businesses that require employees to speak English on the job.

The Salvation Army Thrift Store being targeted by the Equal Opportunities Commission (EEOC) clearly posted its "speak English"requirements and gave employees one year to learn the language.But the EEOC still filed suit saying this was a "civil rights" violation.

And it's getting worse. Last year, over 200 similar charges were filed with the EEOC -- up from just a handful ten years ago.

To make matters worse, Nancy Pelosi and Congress' Hispanic Caucus have teamed up to block an effort to put an end to the EEOC's attacks on businesses that require English. Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) proposed a provision to the Commerce,Justice, Science Appropriations Bill (HR 3093, S. 1745) that would prevent the EEOC from such legal attacks. The full Senate passed the bill--with the Alexander provision. The House also agreed to the amendment, but later withdrew support after the Hispanic Caucus threatened to stonewall other House bills unless the provision was removed. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi agreed, saying the House will not vote on the bill until the English language provision is terminated.

Gregory, in other words, Pelosi and a small group of Congressmen are defending the EEOC's efforts to sue organizations like the Salvation Army that require English on the job!

I am MAD! What’s up on the troops not getting replacement parts? This is insane. Aaron had me sending him cans of air to keep his weapon cleaned out. Sometimes replacement parts are not even available for months! I know! I worked for DSU in Class IX repair parts. If these parts can be had, they need to be had! We’ve got the money. They have mine—don’t they have yours?

Virgie Bell's View: Tails of the War on Terror

I didn't watch the Democrats debate the other night. I didn't have to. Other than to irritate the heck out me, it would not have created harmony at our home. Yesterday was more for reflection, not looking ahead to the political posturing. However, the newspapers were full of the debate. We all know the bill sent by Congress to President Bush for funding the troops will be vetoed. The sadness of the candidates over this tragedy was palatable. If you are as bad as I am about math, you may be familiar with this strategy.

Say Jerry gives me money to go to the grocery store. I have a list that includes 10 lbs. of hamburger meat and the check he gives me covers that amount exactly. But low and behold, when I get to the store I find that he has added 10 lb. of steak to the list, and not just any cut, he wants Filet Mignon. It gets worse. He wants the steak for himself and his buddies. No girls allowed. Worse than that, there is not enough money for steak and hamburger. One has to be eliminated. Am I to go a week without food so he can show off to his buddies? No, I would leave off the steak and buy the rest of the groceries. You get the drift.

Now, a lesson on the war on terror. Recently we had an issue with a neighbor next door. They have this big dog that they leave in the house all day while they go to work. They have a fenced backyard, so I don't understand the reasoning of that. Not my problem. But here’s mine. The man would bring the dog outside and onto the edge of our yard for his poop. Big dog, big poop. I’ve applied sound reasoning to this and nothing fits except that they are lousy neighbors. Really lousy. I had noticed it over and over again. Stepped around it and so on. I went to our mailbox and the gutter was full of water from another neighbor a couple of blocks down. While getting to my mail box at the curb, I have to sidestep the huge piles of poop. We try to keep a nice yard.

Back in the good old days, I would have grabbed the woman (she is far from being a lady) and I would have hauled her to my yard and made her get it up. Too, Jerry is a big, big man, and strong as an ox. He could have snarled at the man and had him on the run, but this is a different period in history, so instead, I called the law who then referred me to Animal Control, and it was them then, who told the neighbor officially, “NO dog poop next door.” Period. We had been attacked. A war on poop.The battlefield, our front yard. The dog has no territory; he lives with my neighbors. The police were the UN and Animal Control our weapon. Everyone better shape up in the war on doggy doo. Next time, I go to Jerry. He is big and very gentle, but you don't want him to get angry at you. I am Congress. I give him the money for steel-toed boots. The war is now in my favor, but next time it’s those steel-toed boots, size 13 ½.

This, by the way, is a true tale. How hard is that? Our troops need steel-toed boots, so give them boots you jerks, and buy your own steak. SUPPORT THE TROOPS!

Virgie Bell's View: She's Wombded ...

Ellen Goodman, a syndicated columnist has of course weighed in on the Supreme Court’s decision to outlaw partial birth abortion. Her main complaint is that President Bush surrounded himself with men in the photo of him signing the bill into law, whereas Clinton surrounded himself with women when he signed the bill to permit infanticide. Just goes to show you how unobservant I am. I would have never even thought to complain about this outrage. That men have no wombs? That is the argument?

I had to throw my Time Magazine down in disgust. Mr. Klein felt the need to admonish the President because he did not sign into law the silly bill that was sent to him regarding the money to support the troops. He failed to mention that it was so outrageous that he would have been an idiot to sign it. The pork that was slipped into it by the members of the House was absolutely over the top. It might as well have had an appropriation for haircuts for John Edwards. It was just that biased.

It seems that Senator Clinton has finally given us a clue as to what job would be appointed to the First Husband—that of a roving ambassador, to restore the goodwill of the world toward the United States. I will say this much for her, she stands by her man. They don't live together and the job she would give him would put an ocean between them. I really can't blame Ms. Clinton, but you know what? I have had it with the Clinton’s. I am just so sick and tired of all of the idiotic-ego-fed-power-hungry-me-first-image this little family has brought to us. I just so wish that they would give it a rest. Give me a little time to forget that Virgie Bell helped to further this when I voted for the good old boy two times. I might be a little more forgiving if my vote had not helped this obsession the Clinton’s have with the role they seem to feel is rightly theirs; running the USA.

Power is not for the likes of those who build nuclear power plants for North Korea or who ignore the first attack on The World Trade Center. We hear over and over how Clinton balanced the budget and left a surplus. Jerry and I balanced ours too, at one time. All it requires is that you don't fix anything, do not repair, do not build, do not furnish. Find out which programs consist of the most votes and fund that. Free, Free, Free. That is all we heard from that administration. A stitch in time saves nine never occurred to the Clinton’s and we’ve have been paying for it ever since. Osama Ben Laden was trussed up like a chicken and offered to Bill Clinton. Nope...no go. Our military was just for parades, and to play Hail to the Chief as far as President Clinton was concerned.

Mr. Clinton was forever pictured with his arm around Arafat and the leader of Israel. Peace, yes peace. What a joke. Not one day of peace. His dialogue with these two leaders came to nothing. The United States was left to hobble along on flat tires with an overheated engine. I feel the most important role that a President can play is that of reasoning. Good judgment is the paramount requirement. Mr. Clinton had none. Oh, he was smart. Book smart, yes, but did he use good judgment as head of his family or of my nation? No. He is the only president that I will ever remember walking down the street with a big grin, a big Mac, and a big coke. The White House was turned over to the children. Fast food heaven, movies everyday, and a big goofy grin. I do not want to contribute our tax dollars for him to go right back out there and restore goodwill among a world that has no goodwill toward anyone or anything. Some people seem to believe that dialogue is the answer. To put on short skirts and sappy grins and go talk to those that would blow us off the face of the earth.

Oh yes ... before I forget, I would like Ms. Goodman to know, now that she's mentioned it, President Clinton surrounded himself with women, and yes, even in the Oval Office with a little intern. Just a little blow by blow account.
