1952

I got an e-mail from my traveling friend in Amherst. Mickey’s class is having a class reunion this year at the Amherst celebration. So what all was going on in the world when he graduated? In the year 1952, the Democrat’s long hold over the White House was coming to an end. We had a real hero to go into office. The great General Dwight D. Eisenhower would become the president and his running mate, Richard Nixon, Vice President. No matter what is going on in the world, you cannot get away from politics.

Poodles and pony tails were all the rage, along with the game of Scrabble and the chlorophyll products. Mickey was co-captain of the Amherst Bulldogs. This was the year that Mickey voted for Jean against me for football queen. See Friday Night Lights, Junior Play and senior trip post. Harvey, De’on’s dad, won Pep Squad King. Debbie Reynolds and Marilyn Monroe were the big female hits for the movies. Singing in the Rain was one of the movies highlighted that year. Patti Page was the top singer with “Doggie in the Window”, and “Till I Waltz Again with You.”

Books: The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale and Giant by Edna Ferber. Joy just got back from Chicago for a girl trip with her daughters. She was one of the cheerleaders for 1952 and was the steady beau of her future husband Harvey (not our Harvey!). It was a slow and easy time for those of us who lived in this part of the country. I hope De'on and I will be able to go for the Amherst celebration. I want to see everyone at least once more before I check out...

What a wonderful place in time this was. I am almost jealous of the era you got to grow up in. It is no wonder that your kids and grandkids turned out so great, coming from your blood and values. You have taught us so much!

Yes, you have, Mom. And you're checking out about the same time as me it seems. Don't pack yet. Check out time is certainly not before you spend time with your partners in crime! lol!
