'aunt karen' and Uncle Gary

Aaron and Gary out at Gary's bar. They were so showing off. Aaron had just completed his little number of: "Is it this way to the shower or is it that way to the shower?" And with this and that, he had turned from one side to the other, twirling his wrists and ankles into a Body Builder Finger-Pointy Pose! We were cracking up. It was a great time. Summer of 2003; Mom stuck in summer school in an American History class I had to sit through in which I never heard one good thing about us. He compared our President to Nazis and our military to rapists. How nice to have to ask this professor for an excused day from class to take Aaron to Brownfield and stay there with him. The prof didn't hold Aaron against me and gave me the day off, continued to rant, and gave me my 'A' which you can well imagine, I despised earning.

Brad (my dad's step-grandson), Aaron, Zach, Gary and Karen. I'm going with '88. Yep, '88. I was home on leave after AIT from Ft. Lee. Late September '88. See how well I can still figure things out. Still, that's not a good substitution for writing the dates on the back, which I still have not done. Some day. I find this valuable as time goes on. So many of my grandmother's old photos do not have names or dates, and it really is needed for future generations--or if you become forgetful. Now wasn't that a helpful hint for the day? ;)

Protecting the tat
This was taken out at aunt karen's pool not long after Aaron got his tat. I remember it still had vaseline on it and he couldn't get it wet yet. I've seen this son of mine proud of many "things" in his life, but this one had to top the list. He bragged to me of his good deal. "A $1400. tat for $400. Makes a mom proud her son knows a good deal when he feels one.

Same American History summer!

I have been away from the blog all week-end, entertaining company. Randy Lyles and his wife Debbie arrived at about 8:30 Friday night and Esther and her new guy, Sheldon, a little later at 11:00. We stayed up until 5:00am visiting! Randy is a Marine, he spent 4 years back in the mid-seventies in the corps, mostly in Japan. He had some good stories to tell and one of the first things he asked for when he got here was to see pictures and anything I had about Aaron. He said, "Esther says you have a book or something about Aaron?" I got out "No True Glory", "Operation Homecoming" and some of the pictures and articles I have. We spent most of the day Saturday swimming and remembering Aaron. Martin and Julie joined us later that afternoon for grilling burgers, ribs and sausage. We all looked at old pictures that Esther brought, but Randy, who is a reader, sat apart for a while and read everything I had about Aaron. When he read "Timeless" he handed the book back to me and said "De'on is such a good writer, that brought a tear to my eye."
So, even though I wasn't here on the blog, Aaron's birthday was not forgotten by any of us.
I told Randy about Gunz Up, so I think maybe we will be hearing from him soon.
Everyone left yesterday afternoon, and Gary and I, very tired, went night, night very early! We had a blast with the friends we grew up with. It was awesome to be all together again.

I had no idea that Randy was a Marine! How awesome. I'm so glad that you guys had a great weekend and I know you hugged Esther for me! I bet you did go night-night early! You and Gary are such great host/hostesses!

So what's on your plate for the 4th? I will try and take Dad out to the park for a bit to buy one of the Frito Pies that the Tatum Varsity cheerleaders will be selling. Our little mascot will be out there. I'm not sure if her little coyote head will be held in her hands that day or not, but I did order a picture of her in her mascot uniform yesterday. What a girl!
