A Little Introspection

So......I really never thought that I would be one of those people who instantly jump on others with the "Once a Marine, Always a Marine" or "There are no Former Marines" lines. While I do fiercely believe in these ideas in my own day to day, post-active duty life, I feel that people should be able to make there own call in how they feel about their prior service and not everyone took to their professions the way some of us did.

A few days ago however I did actually correct one of my peers at work. This is a man who will introduce himself amongst the other service members at my new job as a "former Army Ranger" and he is, true to form, a very proud one at that. He was speaking to another colleague and he referred to me as "a prior Machine Gunner". And.....as you all can imagine....it just caught me wrong......and I stopped him, and calmly informed him, you see what you have to understand about me is, that I will be a Marine Machine Gunner until I draw my last breath." His response was, "well look at what you're doing how." And I had to give him a lesson in personal philosophy.

The term Marine Machine Gunner is not a profession. It's a walk of life. It's this wonderful abrasive / aggressive personality that completely overtakes those of us who believe in what we do. The more I thought about it over the past few days, I've started referring to it as a sort of charismatic chaos. A perspective of being entirely mission oriented (whether that mission is disrupting an insurgency or going out to the bar with some friends) mixed with a confidence that no one on god's green earth can hold a candle to (How could it go wrong?.....it's us) and having the biggest most caring heart that very few people will ever know about because we keep it tucked under layer upon layer of scars. But just let one person attempt to do harm to those souls in our charge and we become a monster of mythic proportion.

These Ideas can never be a nine to five job. It's a definition, never a description.

I'd have to say you know exactly what you speak of! Your words describe Aaron, and they describe the Machine Gunners I've come to know because of him.

I love them.

Great post! You explain what many of us could never attempt to explain, but I believe we understand, because we so need people like you. And the heart part, man, you sure got that right. Look who I am surrounded by here! You Gunners hearts are the biggest!

You're not a "former" anything, not now or ever, but defined by your unique calling. That's what I believe is what sets you apart. You don't have a "job", but a calling that is who you are to the core (no pun intended, sir).

I look forward to your sharing more with us, so that we may all let you know just how proud and appreciative we are that you answered that call.

OORAHHH BRUTHA, couldn't have said it better myself. I've tried to explain it to people when they ask me why I was dead set on being a Marine Machine Gunner even before boot. Now all I have to do is tell them to read this blog.

and in follow of Ms. Deborah, here is my littel latin phrase...

"adaequatio intellectûs
nostri cum re"

it means...
"conformity of our minds to the fact"

I thank God everyday for the Warrior spirit that you men and women in uniform are born with. As I have said before in an old post on Gunz, our country would not sustain without the character that you possess, and the compassion that you show for your fellow brothers and their families is second to none. Thank you Billy and David for sharing yourselves with us. We can never thank you enough.

P.S. Are we not the most blessed blog in the world to have REAL MARINES sharing with us?

We are truly the most blessed! This adds life to my bones!

In fact, there is no better comparison I can think of than the Pits that Aaron and David had in common. Hennessy could and would rip anything to shreds that threatens him or what's his, yet his heart is the biggest of all my four furry heart beaters and stealers!

Yes, this is an awesome blog and I enjoy it so much. I don't of any other blog that makes me laugh and cry or just sit and think like this one.
